Melbourne Mahjong Club is a private Riichi club dedicated to advancing the capabilities of its members through organised play. How can i join if i don't know any members?
Membership is limited to applicants who are sponsored by 2 regular full members. If you don't know any full members we recommend getting in touch with us to discuss your application. We recommended attending a few sessions and playing with a member of our committee to judge your etiquette and playing standard. We will the have a committee meeting to review you suitability prior to delivering an application outcome.

Membership Application process
In an effort to ensure that prospective members are both suitably proficient in playing Riichi mahjong and will make a good fit for the culture and environment of the club the following actions are to be taken after an application which has been sponsored by 2 full members has been received. A note that knowledge of the game is not the only metric by which members are admitted, personality, behaviour and demeanor are all taken into consideration along with playing proficiency.
1: After the application has been received the membership subcommittee will meet to review the application. Items which should be considered include:
- Behaviour during games
- Knowledge of etiquette
- A positive mood and personality while playing
- Knowledge of the rules
- Knowledge of scoring (using a scoring table)
- Playing to an intermediate or advanced level
2: If the membership subcommittee is satisfied with the candidate then a test paper should be issued to determine the knowledge of the candidate in relation to the rules and behaviour.
3: Should the test paper be retuned with a result of 75% or higher, then the candidates name shall be posted to all members via email and posted in the club forum. This application shall remain for a period of 7 days. If during that time any member of the club has reason to see why the candidate would not make a suitable fit, then they shall communicate their concern to the club secretary as soon as possible. All correspondence will be treated as strictly confidential. Should the secretary receive any negative correspondence then they shall make the membership committee known and they shall review their findings. Should the secretary receive 2 negative responses from the membership, then the candidate is considered black balled and bared form membership for a period of 6 months. After which time they are permitted to reapply.
4: Should no correspondence of any kind reach the secretary in the 7-day period the candidate shall then be offered a membership to the club. After payment of fees is made their name will be added to the membership list.
